Despite the ban on the use of iPhones by civil servants in Russia, sales are breaking records in the country. Local sources revealed that the allegations of espionage have not been borne out and sales have multiplied.
Russia failed to prevent iPhone sales
Despite an iPhone ban on government employees in Russia, Apple sales have skyrocketed this year. Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) had banned government employees from using iPhones due to concerns that the US could use the phones for espionage. But reports from local sources showed that the ban did not reduce iPhone sales.
Sales data revealed that iPhone revenues from January to September 2024 amounted to about $71,470. This represents a four-fold increase compared to $17,670 in the same period last year. Although the figures have not yet been confirmed, it is possible to say that the ban is not effective.
Accordingly, users in Russia did not hesitate to buy Apple devices. Although iPhone prices are more expensive in the country, it was realized that the Russian government was not successful with the bans. In addition, the FSB’s claim that iPhones can be bugged does not seem to have found a response in users.
The FSB said that Apple cooperated with US intelligence to allow the monitoring of conversations on these devices. It also claimed that Apple had embedded special tracking software in operating systems such as iOS, iPadOS and MacOS.
Apple emphasized that it does not cooperate with any government to create backdoors in its products. The company emphasized that it is committed to protecting the security of its devices and user privacy.
